“Family?” It was Morwenna who took his meaning first. She pulled her hand free and faced him, her gaze stark with shocked disbelief. “What are you saying?”

He smiled at her and found, to his amazement, that what he had feared he now confronted with almost wicked anticipation. “Morwenna has agreed to be my wife.”

Sir Dunstan blinked, the news apparently more than he could digest. “But then—what have you done to her dress?”

The vicar shook Anthony’s hand. “Congratulations, Lord Pentargon. It will be an honor to officiate, unless, of course, you prefer a more elaborate ceremony on the mainland.” Anthony glanced at Morwenna in sly amusement. “What does my betrothed prefer—that is the question.

Morwenna looked around the beach in bewilderment. At least a half-dozen fishermen, friends who had known her since birth, offered their hesitant congratulations, but she could see the question in their eyes: Had she converted the enemy, or had he converted her? She did not know. The future of Abandon might be at stake, but so was her life, and it had just been snatched out of her control by a man who had not even asked her opinion on the subject.

Not “Will you marry me, Morwenna?” Or “I think we ought to get married. It is the honorable thing to do.” Or even “Please marry me, Morwenna. I don’t want your uncle to murder me.” Not a word. Just “Morwenna has agreed to be my wife.”

She felt overwhelmed by the prospect and a begrudging admiration for his cool arrogance in the matter.

Yet she could not deny her share of the blame. She could have refused to respond to him, and now they would both have to pay. The Wheel of Fortune had taken a turn for the worse, or was it really bad?

Something deep in her rebellious heart rejoiced that he had chosen her. Something in her woman’s soul wanted to surrender to his strength.

“Oh,” she said, because a more intelligent reply was beyond her, “what are you thinking?” His smile was positively forbidding, for what he had been thinking at that precise moment he could not reveal in public. Certainly not in front of her uncle or the vicar.

He was thinking that in a fortnight or so, she would belong to him. She would be morally ensconced in his bed, missing more than the sleeve of her gown. Her nude body would be his playground, his to enjoy, and not for love or money would he be deterred from pursuing the wicked pleasures he had planned for his wife.

His wife. Dear Jesus, what had they done? He ought to be swimming for his life toward the mainland instead of standing at her side, calmly committing the rest of his life to the elf.

He flashed her a beguiling grin. “I suggest a small wedding on the island, sweeting. But if your little heart desires something grander, I’m sure it could be arranged.” She gave him a glacial stare, realizing the rogue had left her no choice in the matter.
